Why some activewear is cheaper and what “designed in small batches” really involves

Intro

Activewear pricing can feel confusing. Two sets might look similar online, yet sit in completely different price ranges. This article explains, in a balanced way, why that happens and what it means when a brand says it designs its own pieces and produces in small batches.

Not all activewear is made the same way

There are a few common production paths in apparel. None are automatically “good” or “bad”. Each has trade-offs in cost, speed, and control.

Ready-made manufacturing models
Some factories offer pre-developed designs that brands can select from and customise with colours, labels, or small changes. This approach can reduce development time, lower minimum quantities, and help keep pricing accessible.

Original product development
Other brands start from a design concept, then develop patterns, fit, sampling, and details until the product matches a specific brief. This typically takes longer and can cost more, especially when working with small quantities.

What drives cost in original design

When a small brand develops original pieces, cost is not only about fabric. It is also about the work behind the scenes:

  • Pattern making and fit development
  • Multiple sampling rounds and revisions
  • Hardware and accessory development (including custom components)
  • Testing fit across sizes and adjusting grading
  • Small-batch minimums that increase cost per unit
  • Freight, duties, packaging, and payment processing

Larger brands spread development costs across many units. Small brands do not have that advantage. That is one reason small-batch pieces can cost more even before marketing.

Why BAL produces in small batches

BAL is built as a small-run brand by design. Small batches allow tighter quality control, better design decisions, and more flexibility to improve patterns based on real feedback. It also means we carry higher per-unit costs, because we are not producing at a huge scale.

We do not ask customers to buy based on sympathy. We share this because customers deserve clarity on what they are paying for and why.

A balanced way to compare activewear

If you are choosing between options, a useful comparison is:

  • Do I like the fit and feel
  • Does it suit my actual lifestyle
  • Can I see thoughtful design details
  • Is there transparency without exaggerated claims
  • Do I feel confident in the purchase

Where BAL fits in

BAL sets are designed to be worn beyond the studio. We keep the aesthetic clean, the details intentional, and production focused on small runs. If you want a refined set made with care and made in limited quantities, explore the current collection.

FAQ

Is cheaper activewear always low quality
Not always. Price can reflect scale, business model, and materials. Some affordable pieces perform well. The key is choosing what fits your needs.

Does small batch automatically mean higher quality
Not automatically. It can support quality control, but the result still depends on standards, construction, and fit.

Why do small brands change things between drops
Smaller production runs allow brands to learn and improve based on feedback, rather than staying locked into one version for years.
